Rusty Vollintine

James (Rusty) Vollintine has more than 27 years in the fire service and currently serves as a full-time fire investigator and Accelerant Detection Canine handler for the City of Topeka, Kansas Fire Department, a position he has held since 2002.

Prior to his current position, Vollintine served in varying capacities in fire suppression. He worked his way through the ranks of Firefighter and Apparatus Operator, before taking the full-time position of fire investigator. Before starting his career with the City of Topeka Fire Department, Vollintine worked for a Paid/Volunteer Department in the suburbs of Topeka, Kansas where he rose to the rank of Captain.

Vollintine is an active member of the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Kansas Chapter. Vollintine holds an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science; Fire Science and is currently certified as an IAAI CFI.

Vollintine has over 23 years of Law Enforcement experience in determining the origin and cause of fires. Vollintine attended the Basic Law Enforcement Academy in the State of Kansas, and has received training from the National Fire Academy for Fire Investigators in Emmetsburg, Maryland, The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office (KSFM), and other agencies into the investigation of fire and explosions. To date, he has participated in over 1100 investigations into the origin and cause of fires. Vollintine has spent the last 12 years as an ATF Accelerant Detection K9 handler, deploying his canines in over 400 fire scenes.
